Distribution of coal in India

In India, coal exists in two major geological age’s rock sequence, namely Gondwana, a little over 200 million years of era and in tertiary deposits that are only 55 million years of age.

Gondwana's significant metallurgical coal resource is situated in the Damoder Valley. Significant coal areas are Jhira, Raniganj, Bokaro.

There are also coal deposits in the ‘Godavari’, ‘Mahanadi’, ‘Son’ and ‘Wardha valleys’.

Tertiary coals exists in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Assam, and Nagaland in the ‘north eastern states’.
