- J. E. Purkinje coined the term protoplam in 1839 for plant sap which is living fluid inside the cell. Initially Dujardin in 1835 observed the living juice inside the animal cell.
- Image modified from OpenStax Biology. The principal components of the plasma membrane are lipids (phospholipids and cholesterol), proteins, and carbohydrate groups that are attached to some of the lipids and proteins. A phospholipid is a lipid made of glycerol, two fatty acid tails, and a phosphate-linked head group.
- When plant cells are placed in such solutions, water will move from inside the plant cell to the outside of the cell, resulting in the shrinking of the cell (the cell is said to be plasmolyzed). This occurs because of osmosis.

- Lysosomes are known as suicide bags of the cell because they contain lytic enzymes capable of digesting cells and unwanted materials.
