we can use Dillute HCL for productionof Hydrogen Gas.
Metal + HCL -----> Salt + H2
The possible Reason may be that-
1) Zn + H2SO4 -----> Znso4 + H2
2) Zn + 2HCL ------> Zncl2 + H2
In 2nd Reaction 2 moles of HCL react with One mole of Zn to produce one mole of H2 gas.
In 1st Reaction 1 mole of H2So4 React with 1 mole of Zn to produce 1 mole of H2 gas.
So, we can get Same amount of H2 by 2 mole of HCL and 1 Mole of H2SO4.
So, we H2SO4 because we required this acid less.
Only HNO3 Cannot be used because it is a strong Oxidising agent and it oxidises H2 produced to H20.

Actually, hydrogen gas comes from the water and acid which have no water and. The acid is there too increase the flow of electricity to alllow faster production of hydrogen.
