★ A revolt was started after passing the Rowlatt Act despite opposition from Indian members.

★ The British administration was alarmed by this popular revolt. They worried that the lines of communication like Post and railways would be disrupted.

□ So, they decided to clamp down (suppress) the nationalists.

Suppressive measures taken by the British government to clamp down the nationalists include:

  • The local leaders in Amritsar were arrested for no reason.
  • Gandhi Ji was not allowed to enter Delhi
  • Satyagrahis too were badly treated by the British as they were forced to rub their noses on the ground, crawl on streets and do Salaam to all British officers.
  • British administration also bombed some villages.
