Explain any 4 natural methods of vegetative propagation.
Vegetative propagation is the formation of a new plant individual from various propogules such as tubers, roots, buds, stems, etc.
Now, let's see any 4 natural methods of vegetative propogation:
- Underground stems are modified for the purpose of storing food.
- These stems usually have buds and from these buds, new plants are produced.
- Modified stems include: tubers, rhizomes, and other parts which multiplies the number of asexual reproduction by plants.
- It is a very short stem
- Consist of two kinds of buds: Apical buds, and Axillary buds.
- These buds grow to form new plants.
- Ex: Garlic
- Some plants give rise to new individuals from their roots.
- Examples include Dahlia
- Buds produced in the notches along the leaf margin of Bryophyllum fall on the soil and develop into new ones.
- Begonia is also an example of vegetative propogation from leaves.
That's it!
Why we use vegetative propogation?
- Plants raised by vegetative propogation can bear fruits and seeds earlier than those produced from seeds.
- This method helps in the propogation of plants such as Orange, Rose that have lost the capacity to produce seeds.
- All plants produced by this method are genetically similar enough to the parent plant to have all the kinds of good characteristics from them.

Natural vegetative propagation occurs when an axillary bud grows into a lateral shoot and develops its own roots (also known as adventitious roots). Plant structures allowing natural vegetative propagation include bulbs, rhizomes, stolons and tubers.

Natural Vegetative Propagation
- Stem. Runners grow horizontally above the ground.
- Roots. New plants emerge out of swollen, modified roots known as tubers.
- Leaves. Leaves of a few plants get detached from the parent plant and develop into a new plant.
- Bulbs.
- Cutting. .
- Grafting.
- Layering.
- Tissue Culture.
