Force on a Current Carrying Conductor placed in a magnetic field:
When a Current carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic field, it experiences a force (except when it is placed parallel to magnetic field)
The direction of force on the conductor depends on:
- Direction of current: Direction of force on the conductor can be reversed by reversing the direction of current.
- Direction of magnetic field: The direction of force on the conductor can be reversed by reversing the direction of magnetic field i.e. by interchanging the position of poles.
The force on the conductor is maximum when the direction of current is at right angles to the direction of magnetic field.
Conclusion:
★ A Current carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field experiences a force in the direction perpendicular to the direction of magnetic field.
★ Due to this, current carrying conductor is displaced from its rest position.
★ Direction of force experienced by a current carrying conductor placed in magnetic field can be given by Flemings Left Hand Rule.
