This poem is about losing something which we love and then learning to grow up. It is about a little boy, who in his young life, for the first time, is learning what it is like to experience grief after the loss of a much-beloved possession which is here his ball.

The poem 'The Ball Poem' written by John Berryman is an enthusiastic poem which makes us understand about the epistemology of loss. This poem is related to human life which is full of gaining and loosing something at different aspects of life. This poem begind with the introduction of the situation of a boy. The boy is quite of very young age. He is deeply attached to a ball with which he plays. That ball is a treasure box like thing for his memories. As he was playing with it, the ball fell into a water source nearby to him. The ball couldn't be brought back. The poet was seeing the boy and it wasn't possible for him to bring back the ball. The boy is moved by this sight. He remains still on seeing the situation. He is filled with grief and sadness of loosing that ball. The poet wishes to help him by bringing a new ball but soon he realises that he can't bring the memories that the boy and ball were attached with. Now those memories have just become past. The poet decides to leave the situation on the boy himself because that innocent young child should learn the epistemology of loss and the method to move over a grief. In future the boy might loose something more close to him so he must get prepared for it from now onwards.
