The Sermon at Benaras

Gautam Buddha was born in a north Indian town and was named as Siddhartha Gautama. He was born as a royal prince. Once he viewed the sufferings of the commoners. He saw a sage begging, a old person dying, begger, etc. which made his mind seek answers of this suffering. He couldn't find their answers. He then turned to a sage. He went to a banyan tree and started meditating. After seven days of meditation he attained enlightenment. Then the tree was known as Bodhi Tree. Here a reference to the story of Kisagotami has also been introduced. She was a poor women with her only child. Her child died at a very young age. She cried heavily for that grief and went door to door seeking for the person who can give back life to her child. On advice of one person, she went near Buddha. He then asked Kisagotami to bring a handful of mustard from a house where no one has died. She failed to bring and thus understood that death is inevitable and no one is immortal. About this, Buddha gave his first Sermon at Benaras.

Central Idea :

Central Idea of this lesson is that we should find the answers of inner conscience qúestions of ours by ourselves. No one is immortal. We must accept death and shouldn't cry over it. Instead pray for better afterlife of the died person. We can't achieve anything by crying for the dead one.
