The story 'A qúestion of Trust' written by Victor Canning is about the lóss of trust which can make anyóne depressed and obsessed in life over an issue. This story is about a common person who is not really a commoner. There was a person named Horace Danby. He is initially a good citizen and was a blacksmith by profession. He had a good income by his shop and had two sérvants to help him. He was not really honest though. He was sent to jaîl fifteen years ago for the cáse of a robbery. Actually he had a hobby of collection of rare and expensive books. He didn't have much income to buy them. So he róbbed atleast once in an year to complete his hobby. This time he thought to rób a nearby rich residence, named as Shotover Grange. There lived an lady who was out to another town. Danby kept eyes on the routines of workers there and got a chance one day to execute his plán when all the workers were out. He went there through terrace and wore gloves in order to avoid any imprint of his fingers over anything there. From above mantion, there came a women. She pretended to be the owner of the house and wanted a necklace to wear in a party. But she said that she forgot the key of the sáfe. She asked Horace that if he helped her then she won't say to pólice about him. Horace innocently took off the gloves and opened the safe for that wómen. All things seemed to be settled and Horace ran away. Next day it was found that the real owner of that mantion complained in pólice about the lóss of jewelleries from the sáfe. Unfortunately the imprints of fingers of Horace was found and thus Horace was sent to jáil again. This time he was appointed in the jáil library. Still there he felt strange and disappointed whenever he heard about trust among criminals and theifs.

The central idea of the story is that we shouldn't trust over anyóne so easily. Though Danby didn't commit any crime but eventually he was punished for plánning about it and the lady who was the real criminal roamed free.

The author of this short story is Horace Danby. This story is about a thief who gets a taste of his own deeds. Horace Danby is a thief completely. He steals only once in a year. He is fond of books and spends most of his money on buying books. Also, he plans accurately before attempting any burglary. During his burglary attempt at a big house, he studied well before entering the house for stealing from the safe. A lady thief cheated on him who claims herself to be the owner of the house. Finally, Horace ends up in prison only to regret the way that a man should not trust anyone, particularly from his own profession.

Conclusion of A Question of trust

The message of this story is that we should not trust anyone without discovering out about that person.
