⠀⠀⠀⠀The Tiger in the Zoo
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀---⠀by Leslie Norris
Wild animals are meant to live in the wild. They are not meant to be caged and displayed in the zoos. We all know that the majestic species of tiger is on the verge of extinction. There used to be a time when they used to roam proudly and freely in the jungle. They are not meant to live life in confinement.
They also have the right to freedom like all other living beings. Confinement leads to depression and misery. Moreover, their offsprings lose the hunting capabilities as they are not trained to hunt in the wild. As a result they would not be able to free themselves. Further more, confining wild animals Disturbs the whole ecological balance. We should thus let the animals run freely in the wild.

The poem starts with the description of the tiger. The tiger is moving slowly and quietly along the length of the cage. He could walk only a few steps because he was locked in a very small cage. He is having vivid strips on his body and soft velvet pads. He is in such conditions and in quite rage as he is locked and his freedom has been curtailed.
The poet is trying to suggest that the tiger should be allowed to live in his wild. The only activities he is doing inside the cage were seeing the visitors in an unamused way and he keeps ignoring them as they seem to be quite happy to see him there locked but no one trying to understand his pain , how it felt like being raged. He is helpless as his strength now lies inside the cage and he considers themselves as devoid of feelings as none of them tries to help him came out of the prison.
He remembers when he was in wild near the village he used to creates terror for the villagers by snarling around their houses as they are situated near the jungle. He frightened them by showing his white fangs and claws. In the very end of the day, only thing left for him is to hear the sounds of patrolling officers that used to came to check an area whether it is safe or not. During night the tiger used to stare brilliant stars shining in the sky which is somewhat providing him some hope. And that's how he still have some hope which keeping his faith of getting his freedom back one day.

Through this poem, the poet tried to show the bitter reality of the people of this world who used other living being as a medium or source of their entertainment , curtailed his freedom. Yet they are living freely and ignoring the feelings of the animals whom they kept in cage. One's freedom should not be taken away like this. All have right to live freely and happily in the way they want and wherever they want.

⠀⠀ ⠀
As poet treat tiger as human being i.e, instead of using ' it ' he used ' he ' for him although we use it for referring animals or things.
He compares the tiger's structure with things like :-
His claws soft as velvet pads.
As we notice that the poet didn't used any punctuation marks in the poem. He simply started and ended it with full stop in the very end only.
Poet used two opposite adjectives together.
→ For an Example -
- Quite rage
Quite means calm and though rage represent anger and these both are quite opposite of each other.
- ab cb

The Tiger in the Zoo
The poem 'The Tiger in the Zoo' written by Leslie Norris is the poem which describes the pain and suffering of an innocent animal which is put behind the cage for the view of humans. This poem starts with the description of the actions of the tiger in the cage. The tiger walks slowly in the cage which is a confined and short place with the vivid stripes on his body and soft paws. Tiger is habituated to live in a large area that is forest but here he is put in a small place where it can't move freely. If it would have been in the forest now, it might have been hiding behind the grass as silent as a shadow and would have been waiting for a well fed dear near the water sources to hunt the dear and get it's food. The tiger must have now been moving quietly and quickly around the houses of humans in the villages which are present at the corner of forests and must have been terrorising villagers with it's teeths and jaws if it would have been free now. But now it has been locked in the cage. It is helpless now and couldn't do it's daily activities. It is simply walking the length of the cage and is ignoring the visitors which are coming to see it. Even at night, it is not left in peace. It hears the constant sounds of patrolling cars which are coming to check the animals which disturbs it. A tiger isnnot habituated of such sounds. It simply watches the stars with it's helpless and sad eyes.
