Difference between combustion and oxidation :-

Combustion :

✦Burning in presence of air to give CO₂ and water is known as combustion.

✦All combustion reactions are oxidizing.

✦It involves heat.

Example :

  • Burning of Wood or Coal.
  • Burning of Petrol or Diesel for using vehicles like car.
  • Combustion of Natural Gas or LPG to cook.

Combustion of methane :

  • CH₄(g) + 2O₂ ⟶ CO₂ (g) + 2H₂O

Oxidation :

✦The addition of oxygen in a compound or addition with an element is known as oxidation.

✦The loss of electron or ion from an atom is also called as oxidation.

✦All oxidation reactions are not combustions.

✦It does not involve heat.

Example :

  • The iron metal is oxidized to form the iron oxide known as rust.

        2Fe + 3O₂  forms Fe₂O₃

  • Reaction between magnesium metal and oxygen to form magnesium oxide.
  • CH₃CH₂OH ⟶ CH₃COOH

An oxidation reaction can be called a combustion reaction only when they release energy in the form of heat, light.

Example:

CH₄(g) + 2O₂ ⟶ CO₂ (g) + 2H₂O + Energy

✦All hydrocarbons like alkanes, alkenes and cycloalkanes undergo combustion reactions with oxygen to give the same two products.

✦Hydrocarbon fuels burn when they react with oxygen in the air. As all hydrocarbons only contain the elements carbon and hydrogen, the only products will be oxides of these elements.

QuestioN :

What is the difference between combustion and oxidation? Under what condition, an oxidation reaction can be called as combustion? Illustrate your answer with one example in each case.

ANswer :

Combustion :-

  • Combustion is the complete oxidation of organic compound into carbon dioxide and water molecules in presence of oxygen gas.
  • It is also defined as reaction in which there is loss of electron from an atom or ion. Combustion reactions involve heat and light.
  • All combustion reactions are oxidizing since they absorb Oxygen for the reaction to take place.

Oxidation :-

  • Oxidation is the addition of oxygen in a compound or addition with an element.
  • Oxidation reaction does not involve heat.
  • Oxidation reactions are not combustion reactions.

Oxidation reaction involves loss of electrons/addition of oxygen/removal of hydrogen.

Combustion reaction involves burning of substance in presence of oxygen and release of energy in the form of heat , light etc

1.Oxidation reaction can be called as combustion reaction  only when they release energy in the form of heat, light etc.

For example:

CH4+2O2 ------>CO2 +2H2O + Energy

2. Generally all hydrocarbons show the property of combustion oxidation reaction.
