Answer:
Yes, the statement is appropriate even in the modern world. People tend to grieve for a long time for their lost loved ones. We all become heart broken and tend to take a long time to come back to our normal senses. But grieving for too long will not make them live again - it is a universal fact. Weeping for long only gifts us with even more pain and weakness that eventually degrades our body making us weak and pale.
Death is a universal fact. Once born, it is a universal law that we must all die. Each and every living organism die at a certain stage and it is the rule of the world. Grieving never helps us out in bringing back the dead. The only thing we can do is compose ourselves by making us calm - by overcoming the sorrow.
But today's world tends to forget the eternal fact that one day we all will go from earth. They only believe in material pleasures and money. They always look at their downs and keep on grieving for no cause. No one has the mind set to accept the fact that one day we all must leave the earth and move to the spirit world. Through grieving and pains, the do not have any mental calmness and are always under pressure.
Thus, Gautama Buddha's statement “The world is affected by death and decay, therefore, the wise men do not grieve, knowing the terms of the world.” is ideal even in the modern world where people still take time to grasp universal facts.
