hi,

The inner workings start with an oscillator of some sort; it's some type of crystal like quartz emitting a consistent frequency. I don't know deeper than that. (That goes into physics above electrical engineering.)

Then, digital counters divide those oscillations by 10, 6 and 12 (depending on the frequency of the oscillator) for seconds, minutes and hours.

Digital clocks typically use the 50 or 60 hertz oscillation of AC power or a 32,768 hertz crystal oscillator as in a quartz clock to keep time. Some timepieces such as many digital watches,can be switched between 12-hour and 24-hour modes.
