Sunlight consists of 7 colours.Out of these red has the highest wavelength. During sunset and sunrise, the rays of light have to travel more distance in atmosphere and colours having high wavelength can only reach us because colours having lower wavelength are scattered easily in atmosphere because of air, moisture, smoke and dust.

This is because of scattering of light.
Duringsunrise and sunset,
sun is red in colour while at noon,
the sun appears white as only a little of the
blue and violet colours are scattered.
Near the horizon, most of the blue light andshorter wavelengths are scattered away bythe particles during sunrise and sunset.
Within the visible range of light, red light waves
are scattered the least by atmospheric gas
molecules. So at sunrise and sunset, when thesunlight travels a long path through the
atmosphere to reach our eyes, the blue light
has been mostly removed, leaving mostly
reddish at the time of sunrise and sunset.
