⏩The difference between sigma and pi bond:-

Sigma bond:-

  • it is formed by head on overlap
  • overlap is large hands bond is strong.
  • S orbital can take part in sigma bond formation
  • only one lobe of P orbital is involved in overlap
  • the bond can be formed even the absence of Pi bond
  • free rotation of atom around sigma bond

Pi bond:-

  • it is formed sidewise overlap
  • overlapping small hence bond is weak
  • S orbital do not take part in Pi bond formation
  • both of loops of P orbital are involved in the overlap
  • the bond cannot be formed in absence of sigma bond
  • free rotation of atom around bond is not possible
