dear we take upstream as negative beacuse it is opposite to the gravity of the earth and we take positive to downstream because it's with gravity of the earth

Kanika007: nono.. why not (x-18) ??
Kanika007: as speed of upstream

because when you are going downstream , you are going in the direction of the river so the values of your speed will add up and it will be (18+x) and in upstream, you are going in the direction opposite to the river

So the values of speed will subtract as they are contradicting each other.

Hope it helps!^_^

Kanika007: No.. why speed is not taken (x-18)km/h but (18-x)km/h??
guptasidd1707: because the value of x is smaller than 18 and speed cannot be negative^_^
guptasidd1707: if you are solving with x - 18 you will probably get a negative or unreal answer
guptasidd1707: and you will get to know that it would be 18-x
Kanika007: But..
Kanika007: Isnt there some another way of knowing that rather than solving wrong first and then the right ons
Kanika007: one*
guptasidd1707: no sorry but usually its no. ± x
