Holi – Festival of Color

Holi is the festival of colours. It is the most vibrant Indian festival that commemorates the advent of spring. It is not only a festival of joy, merriment and colour but also of great medicinal value as the Ayurvedic colours of Holi act as a vaccine against pox and measles which occur during this period. On the eve of Holi children sing folk songs and burn an effigy of the evil Holika.

The festival of Holi was greatly celebrated by Shri Krishna in Vrindavan. The great poet Gurudev Rabindranath also celebrated Holi in an endeavour to bring the various religions of India together. Till date Shantiniketan, the poet’s abode and a world renowned university, celebrates Holi with pomp and glory as Basanta Utsav.

Holi is my favourite festival. I look forward to it every year. It is the time when Nature and human beings all mingle and smear each other with the various colours of life be it through colourful flowers or man-made colours.
