ANSWER :

0) The first electric light was invented by an English scientist named Humphry Davy in 1800.

Reason : Here we have used passive form of the sentence. Reason is that we can easily understand that a thing can't be invented on its own. One person must have invented it. So if we want to express it as a complete sentence we have to use passive form.

Passive form in past tense : Sub. + was/were + past participle form of verb + by + obj.

1) He had invented an electric battery by 2) connecting wires to a battery and a piece of carbon.

Reason : Here we have to use past form as the passage is in past form. Then we have used past perfect form in no.2 because it is expressing past perfect form. Then in no.3 , by + (Verb + ing) [Rule] . So by + (Connect + ing)

3) This made the carbon glow which produced light.

Reason : Past form of verb produce is produced.

4) Around 1860, the British physicist Sir Joseph Wilson Swan wanted to create a long- lasting electric light.

Reason : As we have to use two verbs in that sentence, so first verb becomes past form. Then the 2nd verb has to be in present form. So we used 'to' there. Then rule : to + Verb (present form) . So to + verb , to + create.

5) He found that a carbon paper filament did the job but it 6) had burnt quickly.

Reason : 5) Past form of verb, find is found. 6) We have to use past perfect form there. So past perfect form , had + past participle form, had + burnt.

7) Thomas Alva Edison experimented with thousands of different filaments. In 1880, he discovered the right filament, which helped him to invent the light bulb.

Reason : 7) Past form of verb, experiment is experimented. 8) Past form of verb, help is helped.
