Nutrition is a process which involves the utilisation of food by an organism to give out energy for growth and development.Holozoic is a form of heterotropic nutrition. It is a process when a simple substances are obtained from the complex substances by animals, for example protein to amino acids.

Holozoic mode of nutrition mainly refers to organisms which have animal type feeding habits.

Some more features of the organisms following this made of nutrition are :-

  • They depend upon other sources for food.

  • They may consume both solid and liquid forms of food.

  • The solid foods which these organisms consume, include complex, organic, insoluble and non-diffusible matter.

  • The liquid foods which these organisms consume ,include simple, organic, soluble and diffusible matter.

These organisms can be further segregated into 3 types :-

  • Herbivores - Consume only plant matter. (Eg - Cow)

  • Carnivores - Consume only animal matter. (Eg - Lion)

  • Omnivores - Consume both plant and animal matter. (Eg - Human Being)
