' day is celebrated on different days in various countries. In India, teachers' day is celebrated on 5th September every year, which is the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second president of India and a staunch educationist. He has played many roles in his life. He has been a teacher, philosopher author and politician. He was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. Born in a middle class family in Tirutani in 1888, Radhakrishnan was an outstanding student. Radhakrishnan studied philosophy at Christian College, Madras. Radhakrishnan was awarded knighthood in 1931. In 1954, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. He got honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.
