Define Homologous series.

In organic chemistry, a homologous series is a sequence of compounds with the same functional group and similar chemical properties in which the members of the series can be branched or unbranched, or differ by -CH2. ... homologous series is the  successive series of carbon compounds which differ from the CH2 group having the same chemical properties and same functional group and which belongs to the same family

----------------------------------

example

----------------------------

butane ------ C4H10

pentane ----- C5H12

hexane ------ C6H14

these two will differ from CH2  group and they belong to alkane family and are successive carbon compounds

there homologous series of carbon compounds will differ from 14 amu because molar mass of CH2 is 14
