A series of compounds in which the same functional substitutes hydrogen in a carbon chain is called a homologous series....eg.2H3C1 and C2H5C1 differ by a -CH2 unit..:-D

when we start adding CH2 in an carbon chain then it starts becoming a homologous series... eg ...

propane and so on...
