QUESTION : 1. How were Diwani Rights, Dual Government and Famine of 1776 corelated ?
ANS: The most important outcome of the battle of Buxar was the acquisition by the British of the Diwani rights. Lord Robert Clive returned to Bengal in the middle of 1765.Clive was interested in increasing the advantages gained by from Buxar War. In return for regaining Delhi Shah Alam II issued a farman. This granted the Diwani rights of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa to Company upon payment of 26 Lakh rupees
The Diwani rights vastly increased the political and economic power of the Company. The Company had spent a lot of money fighting Mir Qasim. It wanted to make good the loss from the Diwani rights. The lawful right to collect the revenue of Suba Bengal had made the company politically powerful. The British now brought about a new system of rule. Two rulers thus exited in Bengal. On one hand, Nawab, Nijm ud- daulah enjoyed political power and looked after law and administration. On the other hand, the British had economic power and the right to revenue collection. This system in Bengal is known as the dual system of administration.
The dual system of administration continued in Bengal from 1765 to 1772. The main objective of the Company during this time was to collect as much revenue as possible. This led to disastrous famine in Bengal in 1770
In 1768, there was the absence of adequate rain fall and timely irrigation. There was no hope of crops even in 1769. Even as the cremation fire of the times leaped up- the British army collected enough paddy grain by hook or crook for its food supply and them set about collecting revenue. This is known as ‘the great famine of 1776’.
Answers
Answer:
Dual Government in Bengal was introduced by Robert Clive in 1765 and continued till 1772.
Under this system the administration of Bengal was divided in to two parts- Diwani and Nizamat. Diwani means right to collect revenue was given to company and Nizamat means administrative rights were given to nawab.
Company increased the rates of revenue and harsh measures were used to collect revenue.
The welfare of people was completely neglected by both the company and nawab.
British appointed collector to collect revenue, people were forced to pay high rates. As they were not capable to pay, they left the villages or fled to other villages.
Company's policies led famine in Bengal in 1770.
