Yes, it is true that Horace was clever but the lady in red was cleverer.

Explanation:

The question concerns the short story titled 'A Question of Trust' written by Victor Canning. The story is about a robbery and robber Horace and how he was fooled by a Lady.

Horace Danby is a man in his fifties and unmarried. He loved expensive books and to buy them he would perform robbery once a year. Horace was a clever robber, who was never caught.

But, in the story, when Horace went to a house at Shotover Grange, he was befooled by a lady in red, who professed to be wife of the owner of the house.

When Horace was opening the safe at Shotover Grange, a lady in red came there and caught him red-handed. The lady demanded Horace to open the safe for her as his husband is not at home and she forgot the password of the safe. Horace, to get himself saved from police, agreed to help the lady. But the lady was not wife of the owner of the house, she was another robber, who fooled Horace and led him to leave his fingerprints on the safe.

Thus, we can say that  though Horace was clever but the lady in red was cleverer.

Answer:

Yes, I agree with this statement. This can be justified By:

Horace was clever. He planned the robbery cautiously. He studied the target properly, took the appropriate tools along with his gloves to ensure no fingerprints are left behind.

But the lady in red had all the requisite information. She posed as the mistress of the house and also exploited Horace's fear of being getting discovered.

She very cleverly tricked Horace into cracking open the safe and handing her the jewels.

She also made sure that Horace leaves his fingerprints at the site. This she did by distracting him by picking up a cigarette which Horace offered her to light after removing his gloves.

Thus the lady outwitted him in the end.
