Given:

The horizontal component of the earth's magnetic field at a place is 1√3 times the vertical component.

To Find:

The value of inclination at the place

Solution:

The angle of dip or inclination (δ) is the angle that the total magnetic field of earth makes with the surface of the earth.

The magnetic field is represented by 'B'

Bv is the vertical component while 'Bh' is the horizontal component of the magnetic field.

Bh = Bcosδ.............(i)

Bv = Bsinδ...............(ii)

Diving equation (ii) by equation (i), we get

  Bv/Bh = Bsinδ/Bcosδ

⇒ Bv/Bh = tanδ........(iii)

According to the given conditions,

Bh = 1 /\sqrt{3} Bv ............(iv)

Putting the values of equation (iv) in (iii), we get

\sqrt{3} = tanδ

⇒ δ = 60°

Hence, the angle of inclination at that place is 60°
