The Thyroid Gland. The function of the thyroid is to serve as a storehouse for iodine and to secrete into the blood stream thyroid hormone, which has as imilating effect on growth and metabolism. The thyroid affects other ductless glands and the sympathetic nervous system.

Somehormones affect only one or two organs, whereas others have influence throughout the body. For example, thyroid-stimulating hormone, produced in the pituitary gland,affects only the thyroid gland.
