Answer:
As far as influencing local climate directly, I would say the two most important human activities are city building and agriculture.
“Urban warming” is a phenomenon caused by replacing local vegetative cover with things like roads and highways, concrete bridges, brick buildings with asphalt roofs, and parking lots full of metal cars. All those things absorb sunlight, then radiate it back into the local atmosphere, often making it considerably hotter locally than it would be with trees and grass.
In much the same way, agriculture changes the ground cover. Cutting down a thick forest to plant grain, or grazing rich, green pastures to the point of barrenness, changes the way the ground absorbs and radiates the sun’s heat back into the local atmosphere.
This gets at the heart of a two-pronged solution to climate change: planting trees. Trees not only take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere in general, but they also provide locally sourced shade and ground cover.
- Evolution of factories
- cutting down of trees
- Increase in greenhouse gases
