Given :

A train 280 m long is running at a speed of 56 km/h. How much time will it take for the train to

Cross an electric pole ?

Cross a 560 m long bridge ?

To Find :

Time taken to

  • Cross an electric pole ?

  • Cross a 560 m long bridge ?

Solution :

I) Time taken to cross an electric pole

Given that :

Length of the train = 280 m

Speed of the train = 56 km/h

So, we need to convert any of these two in the same unit, let us convert the length of the train into km

We know that :

1000 m = 1 km

280 m = 280/1000 m → 0.28 km

Formula for getting time :

  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: \star \:   {\underline{  \orange{\boxed{ \red{ \frak{ Time ({ \sf T}) = \frac{Distance({ \sf D})}{Speed ( \sf S)}}}}}}}

Here, Length is assumed as the distance

Now, putting the values in the formula above we get

  • Time = 0.28/56

  • Time = 1/200

So, the time is 1/200 hr

Converting into minutes we get

1 hr = 60 min

1/200 hr = 1/20 × 60 = 0.3 mins

Now, converting into sec

1 min = 60 sec

0.3 min = 3/10 × 60 sec = 18 sec

Time taken by the train to cross the pole is 18 sec

II) Time taken to cross a 560 m long bridge

Given that :

Length = 280 m

Speed = 56 km/h

Length of bridge = 560 m

Total length = 280 m + 560 m → 840 m

Now, converting the total length into km

840 m = 840/1000 = 84/100 = 0.84 km

Therefore, using the same formula for time i.e

  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: \star \:   {\underline{  \orange{\boxed{ \red{ \frak{ Time ({ \sf T}) = \frac{Distance({ \sf D})}{Speed ( \sf S)}}}}}}}

Putting the values we get

  • Time = 0.84/56

  • Time = 84/5600

  • Time = 3/200 hrs

Now, converting into mins :

3/200 × 60 mins

0.9 mins

Now, converting into sec :

1 min = 60 sec

0.9 mins = 9/10 × 60 sec = 54 sec

Henceforth, time taken to cross the bridge is 54 seconds

II) Time taken to cross a 560 m long bridge

Given that :

Length of bridge = 560 m

Total length = 280 m + 560 m → 840m

Now, converting the total length into km
