This is because when hot water is poured into the thick glass the inner surface of the glass tries to expand while the outer surface of the glass tries to remain constant without expanding so this difference causes the glass to break. When hot water is poured into thin glass the difference to expanding of the inner surface and the constant body of the outer surface is negligible therefore avoiding the breakage of the glass therefore test tubes are made up of thin glass
