1:Chipko movement, also called Chipko andolan, nonviolent social and ecological movement by rural villagers, particularly women, in India in the 1970s, aimed at protecting trees and forests slated for government-backed logging. The movement originated in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand (then part of Uttar Pradesh) in 1973 and quickly spread throughout the Indian Himalayas. The Hindi word chipko means “to hug” or “to cling to” and reflects the demonstrators’ primary tactic of embracing trees to impede loggers.

2:It was initiated in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm in the mind of the populace for the conservation of forests and planting of trees. The main objectives of the planting of trees during Van Mahotsav are to: Provide fuel.

3:t was a problem of, well, elephantine proportions. As a wild herd of 50-odd pachyderms sauntered across from the Dalma forests of Bihar into the populous neighbouring districts of West Bengal, the local administration was at a loss. The police came out in force but their lathis could not sway this herd. Instead, the elephants halted traffic on several national highways and long distance trains had to screech to unscheduled stops. Meanwhile, pot-bellied forest officials huffed and puffed along with frenzied mobs of villagers following the herd in a cross country chase.
