Although, Mercury is nearer to the sun than Venus, It's not the hottest. Venus is the hottest and brightest planet of the solar system. Mercury have a very thin layer of atmosphere that makes it unable to trap heat. Venus have a better layer of atmosphere and it have a high percentage of carbon dioxide in its atmosphere due to greenhouse effect it traps heat.
