The east coast (Atlantic), however, has very different coast line. Its flatter (relatively speaking) but those receding glaciers did a great job ripping up the coast line. Pretty much every coastal city/town from the north of Maine down to Florida (and the Bahamas and Caribbean in general) has at least one marina. A days sail in new england can get you easily to a dozen different towns and marina. They all have finer features on the coast line with smaller bays (than San Francisco). Safe moorings, or even just bays that are protected from wind, etc, are far more spread out and preventive on the Atlantic side. Once things get the Canada they get more interesting on both sides, but the Atlantic still has the more broken up coastline.

So suitable mostly in that there are lots of good harbors that can protect you from rough seas and strong winds.

Living on the west coast of the USA now and having grown up sailing around new england, I can generally make one observation of the nature of the shoreline / coast on the east coast vs the west coast. The west is far more “mountainous”, ie mountains that go right down to the sea. It’s stunning. But there are very few inlets and coves. San Fransisco bay is one of the few major bays on the west coast of the USA. It’s great sailing, but you have to plan much more careful when jumping from place to place via sail. You can easily find yourself days away from any protected harbor and not be more than a mile from shore. Land land everywhere but not a bay to anchor in.
