The clinical thermometer are generally made of glass filled with mercury. In the thermometer, there is a glass bulb filled with mercury attached to thin neck. Sale for measuring the temperature, marking in Celsius and Fahrenheit is also printed on the thermometer body. When thermometer inserted in the mouth of patient, the murcury of glass bulb expends and forced to rise up in the thin neck. Rise of murcury corresponding to scale is the body temperature of patient. However, due to toxicity of murcury and fragility of the glass, other type of thermometers also available for clinical purposes.
