Just as thier name, they work on electricity you have to specify your question that in what sense you want to know that how it works. A simple answer is that the electricity is converted into rotative motion for the wheels, you must have seen the row of naked wires above the train tracks and when the train travels through them it automatically takes a constant energy to power the train. And the wires which provide the energy are attached to the train in such a way that the train can keep moving
