The mixture is shaken with a dilute solution of NaHCO3 and extracted with ether or chloroform when nitrobenzene goes into the organic layer. Distillation of the solvent gives nitrobenzene. The filtrate is acidified with dil. HCl when benzoic acid gets precipitated.
