This incident is from the detective story The Jewel Robbery at The Grand Metropolitan. At the end of the story, Hercule Poirot explains to his friend Poirot how the pearl necklace of Mrs Opalsen was stolen.
The valet waited in the empty room next to the room where the pearl necklace was kept. When Celestine, the French maid left the room, the chambermaid quickly opened the drawer in which the necklace was kept. She took out the jewel case and once again bolts the drawer. Then she passed the jewel case to the valet who opened it with the duplicate key he had kept ready. He took out the pearl necklace and passed the case back to the chambermaid who duly put it back in its place.
