There are actually a few reasons why the US became a super power though she didn't necessarily choose to become one. Below are a few reasons why she became one though they may not be in order.

Once WWII was over the US actually wanted to retreat back into her isolated cave but Europe begged us to stay around. The US played an intricate role in the reconstruction of Europe in which was going to become our largest market to sell things to.We proved that our military was a necassary power on the world scene and we could reek havoc on nations via nuclear weapons. Many countries agreed to build a "new world order" with the US being the diamond jewel of many institutions, eg: UN, NATO, IMF, World Bank, developing Bretton Woods System, etc.Etc, etc

This is the largely simplified version but my point is: the US retreated once from the world scene and things went to sh*t, therefore we couldn't leave again especially with my other countries soon developing their own nuclear programs.
