Reduction of acetamide to obtain aminoethane.

Explanation:

  • By the reduction of acetamide due to the action of sodium/absolute alcohol or LiAlH₄ in ether or hydrogen in presence of nickel catalyst.
  • The reaction involved is -

        CH₃COCH₃ + 4H + Na+ C₂H₅OH → CH₃CH₂NH₂ + H₂O

  • The above reaction take place by the action of LiAlH₄ which is a strong reducing agent.
  • In order to obtain amine from amide group, reduction of amide group by a strong reducing agent has to done.
  • When LiAlH₄ reacted with an amide group it reduces to its corresponding amine.
  • Therefore. ethylamine can be obtained from ethanamide by the action of LiAlH₄.
