Answer:

• The chromosomes appear in the cell during Metaphase of cell division. And they appear due to the condensation of the chromatin fibres.

Explanation:

• In a cell, the genetic material, that is DNA is present in the form of loose chromatin fibres which is present inside the nucleus of the cell.

• But as the cell enters the cell cycle for its division, there are some changes that occur inside the cell, especially in the nucleus of the cell.

• The chromatin fibres present in the cell starts to condensate inside the cell.

• And as the cell reaches the metaphase stage of the cell cycle, the chromatin fibres have fully condensed and now they appear in rod like structures called as chromosomes.

• At the metaphase stage, these chromosomes align towards the equatorial plane of the cell, and hence it is the best phase to study the structure of chromosomes.
