The guest arrived at Coach and Horses in early February when it was snowing. He came to Iping on foot. He was carrying a black portmanteau. He had come to Iping for seclusion as he had to do some experiments.  

Mrs. Hall found him eccentric because he had been wrapped up in clothes from head to foot. There was no part of his body that was not covered. His face was covered with bandages. His behavior was also very eccentric.
