In a prism, the angle of deviation decreases with increase in the angle of incidence up to a particular angle. This angle of incidence where the angle of deviation in a prism is minimum is called the Minimum Deviation Position of the prism and that very deviation angle is known as the Minimum Angle of Deviation

Answer:

The angle of deviation of a prism is given by the following formula,

δ=i+e−A,δ=i+e−A,where,

δ is the angle of deviation,

i is the angle of incidence,

e is the angle of emergence,

A is the refracting angle of the prism.

As the angle of incidence increases, the angle of deviation initially decreases, reaches a minimum and then increases. It can thus be seen that for each angle of deviation there are two angles of incidence. except when the angle of deviation is at its minimum value.

Since the path of a ray of light is reversible, the reverse ray should also behave in the same manner. Hence, at the angle of minimum deviation, the angle of incidence must be equal to the angle of emergence.
