well...you see..cartoons are mostly aimed at younger audiences which only the kids enjoy (you might have heard your parents silently saying wtf? when something "illogical (?)" happens)
but anime is like- really intense with all the plot, storyline, character development and everything. it can be enjoyed by everyone if they are interested enough! like- there are some really dark animes like another, elfen lied, kuroshitsuji, durarara! and all which you would most likely want to keep away from 'kids' but it's okay!
