The title merchant of Venice is justified in the sense--

Antonio who is the merchant of Venice falls into a level of debt when his friend bassanio wanted three thousand ducats from a Jewish moneylender Shylock. Shylock was abused and treated rudely before by Antonio. As a chance to spite him Shylock gave the three thousand ducats to bassanio only by a bond where it was written clearly that if the money is not returned Within the next three upcoming months then Shylock can or will extract a pound of flesh from Antonio's bond as a surety. Antonio overanxious of his wealth, luck , popularity signed such a dangerous bond. Unluckily his wealth was quandered by a ship wreck and he fall in a great debt unable to pay the money shylock saw a opinion to complete his hatred against Antonio. The story is also justified as it shows the contradictions arose between jews and the Christians.
