Answer:

Acids in the body can be found either in the in the alimentary canal (especially in the stomach as HCl) or as in the blood stream.

Acidic compounds serve two important roles in the body of living organisms. This can be summarized as follows:

1) Importance of Acid in the Stomach:

 i) Prevent infection - the acid in the stomach kills the bacteria you ingest with food.

ii)Proteolytic action- the acid in the stomach helps breakdown proteins                            (proteolytic) for ease of digestion

iii) The HCl in the stomach acts as a chemical signal, allowing food to pass down               from the stomach into the duodenum as well as signalling the pancreas to                  secrete its digestive enzymes.

iv) The presence of HCl in the stomach also activates the digestive enzyme pepsin

     - which is useful in the digestion of protein.

2) Acid in the blood stream has the following role:

Acidic compounds in the blood help to maintain the body's acid-base balance. This is the range of blood pH. It is quite specific and even tiny deviations from the normal, can lead to serious health problems such as inflammation which may affect all body organs.

The blood pH is slightly acidic, and the presence of acidic compounds ensures that this range is maintained and does not get to extreme alkalinity

A healthy diet requires amino acids because it forms the building block of our muscles and tissues. Also, amino acids are utilized to make important enzymes which then support various biochemical reactions, various hormones that influence metabolism, protein like hemoglobin helps carrying oxygen through the body.
