Alveoli are the functional units of the respiratory system. basically gases exchange tacks place here by the simple process of diffusion.

you know, we do breath in many gases along with oxygen. but have u think why only oxygen is diffused into blood because our blood contains haemoglobin with element Fe(Iron). only oxygen can combine with Fe. and CO2 combine in the form of bicarbonate (HCO3)

during exchange, CO2 come out and O2 get in......

Answer:

The alveoli are thin walled and richly supplied with a network of blood vessels to facilitate exchange of gases between blood and the air filled in alveoli. They have balloon – like structure that provide maximum surface area for exchange of gases.
