. The spines on a cactus help to protect it from humans and animals. Its roots are spread out to collect water when it does rain and it stores water in its body for future use.
Adaptations to the Desert. Cactus owe their success in the desert to their structural adaptations. While other desert plants may have similar features such as spines and succulent stems, these evolutionary traits reach a zenith in the cactus.
cacti have spines instead of leaves. These minimise the surface area and so reduce water loss by transpiration. The spines also protect the cacti from animals that might eat them.

In green plants food is stored in their leaves but in a cactus food is stored in their stem.As the climate is very hot in desert cactus has spines to reduce the loss of water due to transpiration. They have very long roots which goes deep into the soil and absorb water.
