Answer:

Chemical fertilizers are a major cause of eutrophication. Eutrophication is a process in which excessive growth of algae takes place in water bodies due to infiltration of fertilizers. When these algae die, they are fed over by bacteria which use oxygen for respiration. This exhausts all the oxygen dissolved in water, leading to the suffocation of aquatic plants and animals.

Explanation:

Fertilizers are rich in plant nutrients which are responsible for plant growth. When they get inside water bodies, the nutrients present in them lead to algal bloom. Upon maturing, these algae  die and are fed upon by bacteria. Since, these bacteria use oxygen for respiration, oxygen dissolved in water gets exhausted and all the aquatic life suffocates to death.

Hence, fertilizers lead to algal bloom by providing the water with excessive plant nutrients. This ultimately leads to the process of eutrophication.
