All chickens, hens and roosters, hatch from fertilized chicken eggs that have been incubated for about 21 days.

When the chicks are about ready to hatch, you can hear them softly peeping inside the egg. If they are being hatched naturally by a hen, Mama Hen will cluck back to them. This will continue for about a day.

The chick will use a hard point on its beak, called an “egg tooth,” to poke a small hole in the egg. This is called “pipping.”
