coal:

100 years ago there were low lying hills on earth due to many natural disasters like floods these hills were burried under the surface of the earth. After many year due to the high temperature and high press these were converted into coal.

petroleum:

petroleum is formed under oceans or seas . It is formed when the sea animals are died and many layers of mud or sand had covered them due to high pressure and temperature it slowly gets converted in petroleum.
