A brown algae living symbiotically with the coral help the coral to produce limestone; the algae provide sugars and oxygen that they produce by photosynthesis. For this reason, coral reefs only form in relatively shallow, clear, warm water. There are four types of reefs--fringing, platform, barrier, and atolls.

Question:-
How are coral reefs formed? Give two examples of coral reefs.
Answer:-
Coral reefs are actually a symbiotic relationship between an algae and coral polyps. The name of the algae is ‘Zooxanthellae.’ The coral polyps provide shelter to the alga and zooxanthellae produces oxygen by completing the process of photosynthesis. The skeleton of coral reefs is made up of Calcium Carbonate. Two examples are:-
- Great Barrier Reef, Australia
- Red Sea Coral Reef, Israel
